Gustavo Fernandez, a sixty-nine year old retired Sergeant Major Marine, suffered paralysis in his left arm while helping flood victims. He developed shooting electrical pain that was so severe, he needed a device implanted in his body to deliver a constant flow of morphine. Now the battery of his morphine pump has run out, requiring surgery to replace it.
